Abstract On the basis of eight available terriers a large royal estate Niepołomice in southern Poland and vital records two parishes located on its area, all dating from early eighteenth century, this article examines effect famines economic situation both feudal lords their peasant tenants. The restrictive framework second serfdom did not prevent severe mortality crises at time triggered by crop failures. key hazards caused for demesne economy were shortages corvée labour peasant-owned draught animals. While famine that affected peasants reported as farmers was high, conducive to impoverishment reshuffled groups various financial statuses.
